YouTube Gets Slammed for Video Showing British Mom’s Gang Rape
LONDON — YouTube is facing criticism for making it too easy for people to upload violent or sexually explicit content to the Internet after a 25-year-old mother was filmed while being raped.
A three-minute video showing the mother sexually assaulted by three boys after her drink had been spiked was uploaded soon after the incident, which took place in November.
In the clip, which was filmed with a mobile phone, the mother appears to be unconscious, with her head lolling from side to side, as she is repeatedly raped. Her 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son are heard crying in the background.
The mother, from South London, told The Sun that she had been put through the ordeal after drinking champagne that had been spiked with a date-rape drug.
“Three boys aged 14 to 16 did it and it was set up by two girls,” she said. “They came round with a neighbor I trusted and I had no problems with them coming in for a while.”
She said that she opened a bottle of champagne “to be social” and that within seconds of having a glass, she began to feel strange.
A video of the episode was later placed on YouTube, but the clip was quickly taken down after a viewer complained about its graphic nature. It is understood to have been seen 600 times.
“Putting (the video) on the internet was an abomination,” the mother said. “I was raped on film, and you could hear my daughter and 4-year-old son crying. I cannot understand how any Web site could show such a thing.”
A YouTube spokesman said that the site’s rules prohibited content such as pornography and gratuitous violence from being uploaded. When people see content they think is inappropriate, he said, they can flag it and it will be reviewed.
“If the content breaks our terms, then we remove it, and if a user repeatedly breaks the rules we disable their account,” the spokesman said.
A source close to YouTube said it was impossible for the site to review every video that was posted because more than 10 hours of content is uploaded every minute.
The source added that trained staff acted quickly to take down inappropriate content when it was flagged.
Since the mother came forward last month, the Metropolitan Police have begun an investigation into the incident and three teenagers — two aged 16 and one aged 14 — have so far been questioned.
YouTube has said that it cooperates with police when material relevant to an investigation is posted on the site.
Under UK law, sites that host videos posted by third parties must act “expeditiously” to disable access to them in the event of a complaint in order to avoid any liability that may result from the content appearing.
Lawyers said that in this case, there may be liability that would stem from the publication of obscene material.
“It is extremely difficult for YouTube to control this kind of content because in this instance — where you have a video that may depict a crime — there’s no technical measure the site can apply that will prevent it being posted in the first place,” said Struan Robertson, a technology lawyer with Pinsent Masons.
“The only option would be for them to review every video before it is posted and that is unrealistic. What sites like YouTube need is a good reporting mechanism which enables content to be flagged to the site once it has been posted, and YouTube operates well in this sense.”
It is not the first time YouTube has been used as a forum for posting violent content.
Last month, a set of videos appeared on the site which showed students from Hitchin Boys’ School, in Hertfordshire, apparently fighting with each other while bystanders looked on and gave them encouragement.
The footage has since been removed.

DEKALB, Ill. - DeKalb Police say a gunman who opened fired at Northern Illinois University is dead. Authorities say the gunman started shooting in a lecture hall on Thursday, injuring as many as 15 people as students frantically scrambled over desks for cover.
Kishwaukee Community Hospital said on its Web site up to 15 victims were arriving, including three to four with head wounds.
The shooting took place around 3 p.m. in Cole Hall near the King Commons, a central gathering place on the 25,000-student campus, according to the Web site.
DeKalb is located about 65 miles west of Chicago.
Northern Illinois University (NIU) was founded in DeKalb as the Northern Illinois State Normal School in 1895. NIU is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with a student enrollment of around 25,000. Some famous NIU alumni include Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer Simpson), Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Oscar-nominated actress Joan Allen, and Steve Harris from David E. Kelley’s legal Drama The Practice.
At least two people were shot and several injured shortly before 4 p.m. CT at Northern Illinois University outside Chicago, CNN affiliates are reporting.

The gunman who opened fire in Cole Hall, a lecture building, is dead, according to DeKalb police, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the DeKalb County coroner’s office said no fatalities had been immediately reported.
A local hospital tells CNN affiliate CLTV that it expects to receive 15 patients and has so far treated at least two.
CLTV reports that Kishwaukee Medical Center in DeKalb is treating six people with head wounds.
A woman named Corrine described the scene to CLTV, saying she was “carried out” of Cole Hall by a “wave” of students running for their lives.
“When one of the kids said, ‘This guy is shooting!’ I just ran to the next building as fast as I could and hid in an empty classroom.”
Officers responded to a call of shots fired on campus around 3 p.m., DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott told the Tribune.
A professor at the school said there was a person with a gun in Cole Hall, a large lecture hall in Watson Hall. Scott said it was possible the assailant may have taken his own life.
The university had ordered its student body to seek shelter, and it canceled classes Thursday.
“Its has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance,” the school said in a posting on its DeKalb campus Web site. “All classes are canceled on the DeKalb campus. People are urged not to come to campus.”
A law enforcement official being briefed on the situation tells CNN that the shooter used at least a shotgun. The official declined to be identified further because the incident was still developing.
An spokesman with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tells CNN that some of its agents are on the scene — strictly in an assistance role. He says one of the things ATF agents would do is help trace the weapon or weapons used. An FBI spokesman says several of that agency’s agents were also en route to the scene to assist.
DeKalb is 65 miles west of downtown Chicago and 45 minutes southeast of Rockford.

So we’ve heard enough banter about CompUSA being on its last legs and possibly shuttering completely after closing more than half the chain’s stores earlier this year. Well, chalk this up to rumor (in fact, rumor with prejudice if you must), but we’re privy to a high-level internal email competitor Best Buy recently circulated which claims to have it on authority (but not “verified”) that CompUSA’s holiday revenue is half what it was last year (which, as commenter Hans points out, might have to do with those store closures), store-restocking shipments are not being scheduled past February, and additional liquidators are being called in to help manage closure of the 103 remaining stores. Sure, it could be a sneaky misinformation campaign — or it could be the truth. We gave CompUSA a ring, and their PR team has yet to respond to the claim; but for what it’s worth, if we weren’t already hearing this kind of thing elsewhere (or didn’t believe it plausible) we wouldn’t waste your time.

Evel Knievel, the red-white-and-blue-spangled motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho’s Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.
Knievel’s death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.
Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.
Immortalized in the Washington’s Smithsonian Institution as “America’s Legendary Daredevil,” Knievel was best known for a failed 1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered cycle and a spectacular crash at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. He suffered nearly 40 broken bones before he retired in 1980.
